A tourist from Paris accidentally met a man pulling a half-eaten burger out of a trash can on the streets of New York. Not recognizing Richard Gere in him, she offered to help him.

In 2014, Richard Gere was in New York City filming the movie Running Out of Time.

Gere played the role of George, a man with mental illness who is forced to live on the streets after being evicted from his vacant apartment.

On the first day of filming, director Oren Moverman asked the star to “become” a homeless person for a scene. Gere was dressed in rags and stood on the busy streets of the city among ordinary people.

Gere admitted that he was initially hesitant about filming in the big city, but when he walked the streets of New York as a homeless man, with an empty cup asking for change, few people noticed him.

“People just didn’t perceive me as a star,” Gere explained.

No one gave him a dime. No one even recognized him. And that proved one point: homeless people are all around us, and we don’t see them.

Unfortunately, someone took a photo of Gere and posted it on social media, claiming that the star was going undercover to raise awareness about homelessness.

The viral post, which was then seen by nearly 2 million people, claimed that he gave away $100 to every homeless person he met.

Gere soon explained that the text of the post was “fantastic” and that he was filming for a movie, not participating in an experiment. He added that he had never given away hundreds of dollars.
