My older sister has four kids. For two months, she and her husband dropped them on me 7–12 hours a day, promising to help pay for my college. It hurt more than the broken promise. The next day, I didn’t show up. She called me selfish and irresponsible, saying, “Family helps family.” But I had helped — she just didn’t value it.
I found a diner job and slowly got back on my feet. Then I started tutoring at the campus library, and parents loved my work. Within a few months, I had several clients and was earning more than I ever did babysitting — and actually enjoyed it.
