Spending extended time in a shelter can take a deep emotional toll on a dog. After months of being passed over, many once-happy and hopeful pups begin to lose their spirit.
One heartbreaking example is Major, a shelter dog from Indiana who has been crying nonstop for over 260 days since his former owners gave him up. Despite his sadness, the staff at the Hamilton County Humane Society still hold out hope that Major will one day find his perfect forever family. Major, a 4-year-old terrier-pit bull mix, has been under their care ever since he was surrendered.
At first, Major maintained a good attitude. Shelter workers described him as sweet and sensitive, a playful dog who adored his favorite toy — the Joy Ball. They called him a “true companion with a big heart”, affectionately nicknaming him “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob.” But despite all his lovable qualities, adopters continued to overlook him.
Over time, Major’s positive spirit began to fade. According to shelter staff, “his bright personality is dimming.” Once full of joy, he now sits alone in his room and cries without stopping.
To ease his stress, he’s been moved to the shelter’s visitor room rather than staying in the noisy kennels. But staff know this is only a temporary fix — what Major truly needs is a loving home. They believe he’d do best in a house without small children or cats.
A meet-and-greet is encouraged, as Major generally does well with other dogs, though he may not always realize his own strength. He may not be the right fit for every home — but for the right person, he could be the perfect, loyal companion. His adoption page reads: “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, this is the one for you.”
Major has been in the shelter for far too long, and it’s heartbreaking to see such a gentle soul so sad and lost. We’re hoping with all our hearts that his forever family finds him soon. 💔
