In the hot heart of Brazil, in the state of Goiás, two girls were born – Kiraz and Aruna . Their birth was both a miracle and a test.
The sisters were Siamese twins, joined at the chest . Their bodies were tightly intertwined : they shared a stomach, shared pelvic bones, and only three legs between them.
For doctors, this has become one of the most challenging tasks in recent years. From day one , doctors knew that if the girls were to live full lives, they would have to be separated. But the price was high — the risks were enormous, and the preparation required time, precision , and almost superhuman effort.
Months of consultations, simulations, meetings. Surgeons from all over the country came together as a team to try the unimaginable. That day, the operating room resembled an anthill. 60 specialists – anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, orthopedists, pediatric surgeons, nurses – worked as a single organism.
Groups of 16 people took turns every four hours to maintain concentration . The operation lasted 15 hours.
When the voice finally said, ” They are separated,” there was silence in the operating room.
Kiraz and Aruna are now in intensive care unit. Their bodies are still weak, a long rehabilitation lies ahead , but the main thing is already behind them. They are no longer connected by common flesh, but will forever be connected by something greater – history, love and courage.
