Abbigail and Isabelle Carlsen recently celebrated their 18th birthday. Conjoined twins, they underwent a complex operation to separate them at just six months old.
Despite additional medical procedures during childhood, they now enjoy full and joyful lives.
The story began when their mother Amy noticed something alarming during a routine ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that Abby and Bella were joined from the belly to the chest and facing each other.
The sad reality was that their chances of surviving until birth were only one in 100,000.
However, Jesse and Amy were determined to do everything possible to ensure that their daughters were born. Fortunately, the birth went well and the girls were born safe and sound.
Research has shown that each of the girls had their own vital organs, their hearts were crossed, their pancreases were connected, and their internal organs were intertwined.
Given this complex situation, Dr. Moir assembled a surgical team of more than 30 specialists, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses. After nearly 10 hours of surgery, doctors successfully separated the girls.
The twins celebrated their 18th birthday last year and continue to share many of their common interests, such as dancing in a group and maintaining friendships.
