Seven weeks after giving birth to our daughter, Emma, I was exhausted. My 73-year-old mother, Ursula, came to stay for a month, helping with laundry, meals, and giving me precious hours of sleep.

My husband, Max, barely acknowledged her help.

On the morning she left, I caught him handing her an invoice.

“Guest room rent: $800. Utilities: $200.”

He expected my mother to pay $1,000 for staying in our home!

Mom reached for her wallet, but I stopped her.

I reminded Max that he’d refused to help with our $2,400 hospital bill because it was in my name, leaving me to make monthly payments from my savings.

Then I showed him an estimate of what a month of childcare, cooking, and housework would cost.

“If we’re charging family, let’s count everything.”

His face turned pale.

“You expect me to pay THAT?”

“No. Mom never asked us for anything. Neither should you.”

I sent Mom home without paying a cent.

Later, I told Max our marriage couldn’t survive if he continued treating childcare as entirely my responsibility.

He apologized, agreed to share childcare duties, and began contributing to the hospital payments.

Weeks later, when Emma cried during dinner, I started toward her.

Max gently said, “I’ve got her.”

For once, I believed him.
