At my stepfather’s funeral, his lawyer handed us a locked wooden box filled with letters. The first line of mine revealed why one of my sisters had disappeared from our family for years.
Thomas wasn’t my biological father, but he raised me as his own after my mother died.
Later, he adopted Michael and Mara, then fostered and adopted siblings Noah and Susan.
To all five of us, he was Dad.
