LONDON, July 9: Bonnie Tyler, the legendary Welsh singer whose unmistakable raspy voice made “Total Eclipse of the Heart” one of the defining power ballads of the 1980s, has died at the age of 75. She reportedly passed away in a hospital in Faro, Portugal, following complications from emergency intestinal surgery.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Bonnie Tyler rose to international fame with her powerful vocals and emotionally charged performances. Her breakthrough came in the late 1970s with hits such as “It’s a Heartache,” but she reached global superstardom in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written and produced by the late Jim Steinman. The song topped charts around the world and has remained a timeless classic, surpassing one billion streams and enjoying renewed popularity during major solar eclipses.

Tyler’s signature husky voice, which developed following vocal cord surgery in the 1970s, became one of the most recognizable sounds in popular music.
