I noticed the girl across the street long before she ever asked for help. Her father spoke to her with a coldness that made my stomach turn, and no matter how perfect their family looked from the outside, something felt wrong.

Her name was Eva. She was quiet, polite, hardworking, and far too careful for a teenager. Every Tuesday, she came over to help in my garden. We’d trim roses, drink tea, and for a little while, she could simply breathe.

One afternoon, after watering the flowers, she whispered, “I wish I could live with you instead of at home.”

When I went to check on her, I found her father sitting with a notebook filled with records of her life: what she ate, how long she brushed her teeth, the tone of her voice, even her facial expressions. It wasn’t discipline. It was control.

I secretly recorded him explaining his “system” and contacted a friend in family services. We discovered he had done the same thing in a previous marriage.
