Surrounded By Loved Ones Dies at 34
Ciara Mageean, Two-Time Olympian and European Champion, Dies at 34 After Cancer Diagnosis
Irish runner Ciara Mageean, a two-time Olympian whose European championship victory marked a defining moment in her career, has died following treatment for bowel cancer. She was 34.
Her family announced that she died on Sunday, November 1, surrounded by loved ones. Mageean had publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in July 2025.
The news has prompted tributes across Irish sport and the international athletics community, with fellow competitors remembering both her achievements and the warmth she brought to their lives.
Originally from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean became one of Ireland’s leading middle-distance runners. She represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo Olympics, establishing herself among the country’s most accomplished athletes.
Her crowning achievement came in Rome in 2024, when she won the European 1,500-meter title. The victory followed years of progress at the highest level, including European bronze in 2016 and silver in 2022.
Mageean also finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, narrowly missing a place on the podium. An injury later prevented her from competing at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Away from competition, Mageean had recently celebrated a major personal milestone. She married her longtime partner, Thomas Moran, just weeks before her death.
Athletics Ireland paid tribute to an athlete whose influence extended beyond her results.
“Her courage, warmth and spirit will leave a lasting legacy,” the organization said, offering condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.
Australian middle-distance runner Jessica Hull also shared an emotional remembrance, reflecting on the training miles and celebrations they had shared. Her tribute joined messages from across the sport honoring Mageean as both a competitor and a friend.
Mageean leaves behind a sporting record that includes European gold, Olympic appearances and Irish national records across several distances. For those mourning her, those accomplishments sit alongside memories of a much-loved teammate, friend and family member.
