I Excluded My Stepdaughter From Family Vacation, Because She’s a Failure

I (42F) have been married to my husband (45M) for five years. We each have daughters—mine, Sophie (16), is a straight-A student aiming for med school. His daughter, Lena (15), struggles badly in school and shows little motivation.

This summer, we planned a beach vacation. Everything was booked. But Lena’s grades kept dropping, so I made a tough call: she wouldn’t come. Instead, she’d stay home, study, and work with a private tutor I paid for. Her dad agreed.

Lena was devastated. She cried and shut herself in her room—but I believed I was doing the right thing. I wasn’t going to reward failure.

Then came the day of the trip.

At the airport, Sophie realized her passport was missing. We searched everywhere, retraced our steps—but it was gone. We had to cancel everything and go home.

Later that night, we found it.

Lena had hidden Sophie’s passport behind a ceiling tile in her closet.

She didn’t deny it. Just sat there, silent.

I was furious. Not just about the trip—but the intent behind it.

Now everyone says I went too far. That I singled her out and compared her to Sophie.

I still believe I acted with discipline, not cruelty.

But now the house is silent—and I’m left wondering…

Did I cross the line?
