My DIL Wanted to Use My Retirement Cruise as a Babysitting Service — I Gave Her a Reality Check

I’m 67, recently retired, with three grandkids (6, 4, and 2). For over two years, I planned a solo cruise as my retirement gift — every detail booked and paid for. It was something I truly looked forward to.

Then my son got a promotion that required a month abroad. My daughter-in-law panicked at the idea of handling the kids alone. She called, suggesting she join my cruise to “celebrate together” — and hinted I could help with the kids while she relaxed.

I agreed politely… but instead, I called the cruise line and postponed my trip by a month.

The day before my original departure, she arrived at my house with packed bags and excited kids. I sat her down and explained I’d moved the cruise because it didn’t feel right to leave her overwhelmed. I invited her to stay with me instead.

Then I handed her a list — repainting quotes, deep cleaning, new curtains — and said, “Since you wanted to share my joy, you can help me prepare for it while I take care of the kids.”

She wasn’t thrilled.

My son later said it was “genius,” but warned of tension ahead. Since then, she’s been cold toward me.

So now I’m wondering… did I handle it cleverly, or go too far?
